Hamish and the Highlands

mood:
Hamish (781k image)

This is Hamish, a hard working cattle, he's at one of the stops on most of the bus tours of of Edinburgh to the highlands. Very patient, sometimes he gets some crisps off a tourist.

Wine

mood:
Had dinner at Haldanes Restaurant in Edinburgh last night, it was very nice, food was excellent and we had this inexpensive but really nice Cab from South Africa: Wild Rush, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tinta Barocca , Rietvallei Robertson, South Africa 2004

Whiskey

mood:

A very good idea that should be adopted at all software and technology conferences, the whiskey tasting...I recommend Kentucky for the site of the next www conference that visits the US so that we can try the other end of spectrum in Bourbon country.

Augury

mood:
Augury (94k image)

I was walking up the stairs to the castle and came across this pigeon that had been taken out by a cat or another predator. The image and the setting made me think of augury where folks used to think looking for patterns of things in animals innards would tell them the future. On my way back from the castle I walked down the same stairs and heard loud shreaks and giggling from below, two young teenage girls came up the stairs and warned me about the "Deed pigeon..." they didn't mention anything about the future.

If ye threw yerself off the north parapet of the castle...

...ye'd land on yer hotel.

This being a quote from my cab driver on the way to the hotel. Just shows you that castles make great landmarks now, and in the middle ages. To be honest I'd have to somehow glide a bit to hit the hotel, but he was right in spirit.

Beaver sighted...

mood:
05-23-06_1035 (24k image)

www2007 will be in Banff, Canada and they sent a giant beaver to promote the conference. I have to say one of the more bizarre sightings in a vendor pavilion.

P.S. I've updated the picture to clearly point out the beaver for those that think I might be drinking too much of the "water of life." smile

Bagpipes and the Internet

mood:

So, we had pipes and dancing at the www2006 conference this morning. Personally I like bagpipes in small doses, and it was nice to have something relatively ancient open such a modern conference. But the motives that drive internet and mobile technology are the same as for raising sheep and trading wool, money. Don't have to clean up after the internet...or do you...

Edinburgh

mood:

Soon I'll be in Edinburgh Scotland (click on the image above to see a live webcam) for a conference and then some vacation. I'm looking forward to it, now I'll have been to England, Scotland, Ireland (North and South), and Wales. After the last two weeks of rain, I'll be in good shape for the weather there as well ;-)

Of course this still leaves a lot of Earth to see:

Prius

music: Errol Garner
mood:
prius (71k image)

After much trouble with my "certified pre-owned" Volkswagen Golf, I decided to cut my losses and get my self a new car. I figured I'd give the Toyota Prius a try, Toyota makes good cars, I can definitely use the gas mileage now, and I have to say I like the space, the quiet, and the amenities in the Prius.

It's a litte strange not hearing the engine and having it shut off when it feels like it ;-) but they have done a good job of giving you feedback other ways and I'd have to say compared to the Honda Civic Hybrid this car has pickup and passing capability that the Civic really didn't.

It also has a nice solid road feel and generally it sounds and handles solidly.

Anyhoo we'll see how it goes, gotta be better than the last one.
